The real unlock is four things 5G physically can't do at once: sustained uplink, sub-millisecond latency, near-zero jitter, and sensing baked into the radio itself. Stack those together and a whole class of real-time use cases becomes possible — most of which we haven't even imagined yet.

Jensen Huang has been clear about where this goes. At GTC he said the base station itself becomes agentic. NVIDIA put $1B into Nokia to build it. Dell called the edge "the most valuable real estate for AI." Nokia's CEO calls it "an AI data center in everyone's pocket."

What that makes possible inside an ordinary home

The network becomes the sensor. Communication and sensing ride the same waveform — so the radio can detect a fall, a gas leak, an infant's breathing irregularity. Through walls. No cameras. No wearables.

Reality gets tokenized live. Dozens of feeds turned into tokens in seconds instead of hours. An agent that knows what's happening right now — not what it processed overnight.

Machines coordinate over the air. Robots, drones, appliances in a closed loop with sub-millisecond timing. No wired backbone holding it together.

And the one I can't stop thinking about: it keeps thinking when the cloud goes dark. A tiny local model handles reflexes. The base station handles the middle. The cloud runs the big model. Lose the cloud link and the house doesn't go dumb — local and edge keep the loop alive.

That last one matters most. Resilience as a feature, not an afterthought. Nobody designs for it today because 5G's jitter makes the hand-off unreliable.

Now the uncomfortable part

China holds 40% of the world's 6G patents, just finished phase one of national trials, and controls 99% of the gallium that every radio on earth is built from. The US national stockpile had zero when the export ban hit.

The US counter isn't out-building their radios. It's making the network AI-native and shoving the intelligence to the edge.
